 Famoso per la Grande Muraglia, i tetti a pagoda e un'innovativa architettura da giardino, è difficile credere che la lingua cinese non avesse nessuna parola equivalente a architettura fino agli anni venti. Di recente, la fiorente economia del paese e il boom della costruzione hanno attirato l'attenzione di molti tra i migliori architetti di tutto il mondo, impazienti di cogliere l'occasione per creare i loro capolavori in una delle più grandi metropoli del mondo. In campo politico, economico e culturale del paese, il nuovo sta rapidamente sostituendo il vecchio. Quando nel 2001 Pechino fu selezionata per ospitare i giochi olimpici del 2008, la città iniziò a subire una trasformazione piuttosto controversa. Lo sviluppo edilizio legato alle Olimpiadi, dalle infrastrutture sportive e culturali alle installazioni per ospitare attività economiche e commerciali, ha completamente trasformato una città caratterizzata da una tradizionale architettura comunista. La capitale della Cina ha aperto le sue porte a una legione di architetti mondialmente famosi (tra i quali si contano Rem Coolhaas, Sir Norman Foster e Paul Andreu). Il processo di costruzione è stato seguito da vicino (e criticato) dalla stampa internaziotale nonché dagli appassionati d'architettura di tutto il mondo e alcuni dei nuovi edifici sono stati già soprannominati come «Egg Shell», «iBird's Nest» e «Watercube». Secondo le normative cinesi, agli architetti internazionali che progettano l'infrastruttura monumentale della città è stato assegnato un collaboratore cinese. Questa interazione tra architetti nazionali e stranieri ha aperto la strada a molti giovani architetti cinesi emergenti, una nuova generazione promettente che sta creando un'identità architettonica fresca. Nell'attualità, l'emergente classe media del paese può vivere, lavorare e divertirsi in edifici, uffici e zone pedonali in stile occidentale, come il SOHO Shangdu e può frequentare alcuni dei ritrovi più alla moda della città, come il ristorante LAN di Philippe Starck e il Bar Musicale con cucina Song di Zhong Song. Giacché queste aspirano ad essere le prime Olimpiadi Verdi, molti abitanti di Pechino sperano che l'avvetimento sportivo internazionale trasformerà la città come lo fece con Barcellona nel 1992. Famous for the Great Wall, pagoda roofs and innovative garden architecture, it is hard to believe that the Chinese language did not have a word for architecture until the 1920s. Recently the country's burgeoning economy and construction boom has attracted the attention of the world's finest architects eager to create masterworks in some of the world's biggest metropolises. The new is rapidly replacing the old in the country's political, economic and cultural centre. When Beijing won the bid in 2001 to host the 2008 Olympic Games, the city started a somewhat controversia! transformation. Olympic-driven developments - from sports and cultural infrastructures to business facilities and commerciai housing - have transformed a city once characterized by conservative Communist architecture. The Chinese capital has opened its doors to a foreign legion of world-renowned architects (including Rem Koolhaas, Sir Norman Foster and Paul Andreu). The construction process has been closely followed (and criticised) by the international press and architecture buffs the world over and some of the new buildings have been given nicknames such as the "Egg Shell", "Bird's Nest" and the "Watercube". According to Chinese regulations the international architects creating the city's monumental infrastructure must be accompanied by a Chinese partner. This interaction between Chinese and foreign architects has opened doors to a number of emerging young Chinese architects, who are creating a new architectural identity. Now the emerging Chinese middle-class can live, work and play in Westernstyle residential buildings, offices and malls, such as SOHO Shangdu and can be seen in some of the city's trendiest venues, like Philippe Starck's LAN restaurant and Zhong Song's Song Music Bar + Kitchen. As well aspiring to being the first Green Olympics, many Beijingers hope this event will do for their city what it did for Barcelona in 1992. |
