EDIZIONE BILINGUE

ITALIANO

INGLESE

Come piace a noi.
ACQUA.

Asking a Piedmontese to say a few fine words about Piedmont is a difficult and sometimes tortuous endeavour. O course, there are those who adore it and are all too ready to proclaim its marvels from the housetops, just as there are those whose similar love affair cannot be shared with «furriners». Who who were born in this salon between the A lps and the sea usually belong to the second category. Our congenital shying away from any form ofself-glorification, however, has subjected Piedmont and Piedmontness to the dictatorship of commonplaces, some of which, I hope, will be laid to rest the little dictionary that follows. You won't find, for example, trite (and envious) references to the character of the people of the Cuneo country, nor even the «D as in Domodossola» that has reduced a splendid city to a spellingexpedient that echoes from Trieste to Taranto. Before basking in the beauty of the fine photos that await you, therefire, cast your eye over this va),personal list of the treasures of a region that is on the way to becomingfashionable, «ma non troppo». Open to one and all, yet reserved The way we like it.
ACQUA (water). The fascination of a place is determined by its contrasts and these are always very marked in Piedmont. The homeland of both wine and mineral water, much to the displeasure of my great-grandfather, who dunked his bread in Barbera for breakfast and swore that water was for washing not drinking. The triglyceride factory (sweets and cheeses) provides the raw material for macédoines composed of doctor-at-bayfruits: Roero'speaches, Pinerolo's apples and Tortona's strawberries. Cavour, liberai and anticlerical, was born in the land that brought forth the Jesuit Botero (1544-1617), the insuperable theoretician of conservation. Valenza, where luxuly is at home, shares Piedmont's skies with Asti, where pawnshops were born. And it's only in Piedmont that a Scotsman's purse is prone to overflow like that ofNeal MacEacharn, who devised the fantasticgardens of Villa Taranto to the citizens ofVerbania.
BOGIANEN (won't budge). Here lies an unjust misunderstanding. This term has taken on the meaning of a stickin-the-mud attitude on the part of the Piedmontese, whereas it really expresses their firmness. It first carne from the lips of the Count of San Sebastiano. When ordered to retreat from the Colle dellAssietta before the French in 1747, he declared «bogioma nen» (we're staying right here) «and when we run out of cartridges, we'll stili have our bayonets, the butts of our muskets, stones and our fingernails». Not lazy, therefore, but tough. Yet also capable of unpredictable surges towards others. And upwards. Need we be swprised thatItaly's champion balloonist lives at Mondovì?
CARDUCCI. Who can say whether Piedmont's image has been helped or hindered by his «Piemonte» ode, which encapsulates the region in an eternal, schoolkid's picture postcard with chamois that leap and avalanches that roar? V hat is certain, at all events, is that theTuscan Carducci did no more than versifi the postage-stamp picture of Piedmont viewed from the bedroom ofbis hotel at Ceresole in front of the Gran Paradiso. A veritable bogianen and no mistake.
