This book
proposes a suggestive journey through the most attractive and unique cafés
in the world. It includes current projects by the most prestigious architects
illustrated by a fine series of photographs and plans. The book shows
the latest contemporary trends in the creation of the corporate image
in these spaces. It also follows the evolution of establishments dedicated
to the legendary beverage, from the smallest bars to the most up-to-date
and rabidly eclectic cybercafés.
INTRODUCTION
The establishments dedicated to coffee drinking and appreciation have
evolved considerably during history. This type of locale hasundergone
a transformation to the extent that everything is now permitted, at least
in terms of architectural ideation and decorative solutions. Limits no
longer exist and what regulates fashion today is eclecticism and a mestizo
style.
Cafeterias, or, as they were originally called, coffeehouses, made their
appearance when the beverage itself began to become popular. Thus, their
birth goes back some centuries. In fact, it is said that the first coffeehouse
was opened in Mecca in the fifteenth century and in Europe only slightly
later. In Oxford, England, a coffeehouse was inaugurated in 1650 and,
in Venice, the first establishment of this type dates back to 1683. From
that moment, an expansion began that has come down to our own times and
that seems to have no end. Many of these establishments came ou of the
meeting places where intellectuals, artists, thinkers, or writers debated
and made known their knowledge, ideas, and philosophies while enjoying
a good cup of tea or coffee. Moreover, the denomination they acquired
in some countries shows this: in Turkey, for example, they were known
as the "school of the wise", and in England they were termed
for a time "Penny Universities."
Currently, although many cafés keep up this original spirit, their
conception has varied notably. Although it is certain that they are still
meeting centers, it is also true that they operated as places of fun and
entertainment, meetingplaces of a different ilk. Their transfomation has
been great, and today's cafés don't have much in common with those
which, in the seventeenth century, invaded the most important cities of
the world.
