| INTRODUZIONE |
FOREWORD  From Africa to Asia, from Europe to the Balkans, from the Middle-East to South-East Asia.A thin but vibrant red thread links all these places, and marks their memory like recurring magic: coffee. For four generations and 110 years, the Lavazza family, the company, and everyone who works there have been spokespeople and witnesses of this culture and product. We are a part of this history. Coffee Roots, the very origins of coffee, preserve intact their own voice and a great desire to tell their stories. For many men and women who inhabit this planet, coffee is still something more than a simple beverage or a moment to rest. It was not just a duty, but a truly unique adventure to collect in book form an ancient heritage that had never been written down and risked disappearing progressively into silence. For this reason, Lavazza is proud to promote this book. The rituals, traditions, stories, and legends which still today, just as many centuries ago, envelop coffee in a symbolic halo that can express what for us are mysterious and unimaginable meanings are the central theme in this effort. Coffee is a ritual, a way to communicate, a pleasure, a business, and sometimes, a necessity that means survival. The faces of the world can be found gathered around a coffee bean. Because gathered around coffee it's pleasant to tell stories and listen to those of others, and it's wonderful to see the reflections of history on those faces. In searching for the ancient traces of coffee, we were joined by genuinely passionate people such as Chef Кumalé, a journalist and cosmopolitan gourmet, who collected original and neverbefore-heard stories, and Guia Besana, Fabrizio Esposito and Andrea Guermani, all exceptional photographers. Together, they have brought to these pages the flavour of coffee, sipped in such far-off places. We want to thank all of them, the Lavazza team that enthusiastically coordinated this project, as well as Andrea Bessone and Carla Diamanti. The former for his patient work locating and creating video pieces of such a multi-faceted and complex experience; the latter, in her capacity as an expert on the Middle-East, for having offered her valuable consultation. Rituali, tradizioni, racconti e leggende nelle quali il caffè rimane ancora avvolto, oggi come tanti secoli fa, da un alone simbolico in grado di esprimere significati per noi ignoti e inimmaginabili, costituiscono il tema centrale di quest'opera. Il caffè è un rito, un modo per comunicare, un piacere, un business e, a volte, una necessità che significa sopravvivenza.
