GAMBERI E GOMENE
90 ricette trovate nelle piccole isole italiane
90 recipes from the smaller Italian islands

EDIZIONE BILINGUE

INGLESE
ITALIANO

Provo a recuperarne qualcuno.

Ninety recipes, borrowed from cooking stars or the most simple kitchens, telling stories about the minor Italian islands and their encounters with mariners, armies, pirates, conquerors, kings, and fugitives. This main dish is served with side orders of stairs, alleys, and memories, the radiant sun, unimaginable beaches and steep slopes over the sea, fragrances, colours, wind, the sea, sorse, flowers, and people's warmth.
"Gamberi e gomene" is not just a title, but rather a "manifesto".
Gamberi asserts that this is about food, food to be experienced at home, out of curiousity or nostalgia.
Gomene (name of the rope used to tie a ship to the pier) speeks of physical and emotional encounters, between islanders and travellers, terra firma and the sea, the island and the world.

three photos and many memories

These islands are a world of their own, much better suited for the traveller than the tourist.
The traveller sees things which the tourist does not - because he's in a hurry or because he's no longer used to look at details.
And the lesser known islands are a such a treasure trove of details: a flower rooting in the crack of a wall, a signboard damaged by wind and salt, a dry-stone wall, a face.
The expert traveller, or the perceptive tourist, looks at these fragments as one looks at the last piece of a puzzle, without which a picture or a thought will remain incomplete.
I really wanted to make this book, as it compelled me to backtrack: a trip through territories already relegated to memory. I rediscovered places and people, and discovered new faces and new talents. The good news - disregarding the beauty of the islands - is that I met with more awareness of and respect for the territory on the part of the inhabitants.
I've chosen to become a photogryher because I enjoy byways, the roads less travelled.
I love the unforeseen, and the smipe of small things. Years ago this not very "mainstream" curiosity brought me tg these solid fragm4 floating in the sea. They were still quite unknown then, and landing on these isIands made oneyeel like Robinson Crusoe, The island was yours. This sense of
belonging is still intense today, even though it may not come to everybody. The "minor", the lesser known island, knows how to hide from the rushing tourist and reveals itself only to those who really want to get to know it.
I have returned to these islands time and time again: I did so in any kind of weather, often during the best months to actually live there, not during crowded August, the Vacation month in Italy, rife with contention, and, with every landing, I always had the sensation of coming back to see a friend I had lost sight of for a bit.
I am used to "writing" with images, and the photos I've chosen for this book are all little anecdotes. I want to try and recapture some, of them.
There's the "tonnara", a special fishing structure, closing the chapter dedicated to a fish which is part of our history and culture: the sky invaded by gulls is the central figure in this shot. The building is on its fringes, like a dinosaur in an age nearing its end, the photo talks about the end of an era.
I dedicated the summary to the pelagic fish, considered a "poor fish" and still quite unknown to the tourist who should learn more about it, as it has fed the islanders for centuries.
The demand for bass at any time and everywhere, has one the one hand brought impoverishment to the seas, which are about to collaps, and, on the other, has given rise to an ambiguity based on the unsaid promise of fresh fish always, while distributing a plethora of frozen fish instead.
