 DENTRO LA SCULTURAElio Garis è uno tra i più noti artisti del panorama artistico italiano contemporaneo. Brizzolato, barba incolta, occhi azzurri dietro un paio di occhialini trasparenti, mi accoglie nel suo luminoso studio, un sorriso cortese e dietro i suoi gesti si percepisce subito il suo essere eclettico e creativo. Solo poche parole e ad emergere è la sua genialità artistica. Disponibile, affabile, un tono di voce pacato, è chiaro e diretto come le sue sculture; pare al contempo sicuro di sé e timidissimo. Sembra non avere piena consapevolezza del suo meritato successo sulla scena dell'arte contemporanea e non intende dispensare grandi teorie al mondo. È un vulcano di idee, che sviluppa soprattutto attraverso disegni e bozzetti: da qui scaturisce il suo processo creativo. È un artista poliedrico che ama sperimentare sempre nuovi materiali e nuove tecniche, di cui cura tutti i particolari, si applica a qualsiasi materia senza tormenti, forma con coscienza, stile e rigore. La sua forza sta nella continua e incessante ricerca dei materiali: vetro, bronzo, legno, marmo, ferro, terracotta, sabbia, piombo, seppur cosi diversi, nel suo lavoro si legano in un'armoniosa melodia come gli strumenti di una grande orchestra. La scultura di Garis è pura forma, non presenta definizioni taglienti o spigolose, ma linee semplici e tondeggianti, soluzioni morbide e ricercate dove il contatto epidermico è un richiamo irresistibile. Bronzi lucidi o opachi, dalle linee dolci e flessuose che si avvolgono su se stesse e diventano figure, catturando o respingendo la luce in un gioco di convessità e rientranze, ondulazioni e insenature. Eleganti opere composte di molteplici tasselli di legno, forme essenziali sospese da solide basi metalliche, che ne rafforzano l'energia strutturale creando un'assonan-za con il lavoro di Brancusi. Sculture quasi aeree che si librano nell'aria, guizzano nello spazio, eleganti forme che si ispirano alla natura con la quale non c'è competizione ma armonica fusione, il colore naturale del-la materia esalta l'eleganza e lo stile delle forme. È piacevole ascoltarlo, preso nel racconto di idee dense e sfaccettate, aneddoti quotidiani o riflessioni di anni, nella descrizione di progetti presenti e futuri. Per questo ho preferito descrivere la sua ricerca artistica attraverso un'intervista e lasciare all'artista la parola.  INSIDE SCULPTUREElio Garis is among the most well-known artists on the current Italian contemporary art scene. With his face framed by a somewhat disarranged silvery bob, a perfectly uncultivated beard and his mobile spectacles, he welcomes me into his bright studio with a courteous smile and behind his gestures one instantly perceives his eclectic and creative being. If you speak to him, even for a few minutes, it is his artistic genius that emerges; helpful, affable, a calm tone of voice, he speaks clearly to make himself understood Ibecause making himself understood is importanti, he seems at the same time to be sure of himself and extremely shy. He is not fully aware of his role in the contemporary art scene or of his deserved success and he doesn't intend to declare great theories to the world. He is a volcano of ideas, he likes to do so above alt through drawings and sketches, from here springs his creative process. It's nice to listen to him, caught up in recounting dense and multifaceted ideas, everyday anecdotes or age-old reflections, in the description of current and future projects. That is why I preferred to describe his artistic research through an interview and leave the words to the artist. Garis'work is a union of art, design and architecture, his works are often conceived for the piace in which they will be set, numerous are in fact the public purchases and site specific interventions. He is a very versatile artist who likes always experimenting new materials and new techniques, of which he takes care in every detail, he applies himself to every matter without torments, creates with consciousness, style and rigour. His strength is in the continuous and unceasing search of materials, glass, bronze, wood, marble, iron, clay, sand, lead, although so different, are bound in his work in an harmonic melody like 7 the instruments of an orchestra. Garis' sculpture is pure form, does not show any sharpness or corner, but simple and roundish lines, soft and refined solutions where the epidermic touch is irresistible recali. Bright or dull bronze have sweet and flexuous lines which wrap themselves up and become a figure, capturing or rejecting the light in a play of convexity and recesses, of undulations and creeks. Elegant works, even though they consist of various pieces of wood, have essential forms and are suspended by solid metal bases, which strengthen the structural energy creating an assonance with Brancusi work. Fling Sculptures or wriggle in the space, elegant forms which are inspired by nature with which there is not any competition but an harmonic union, the natural colour of the matter exalts the elegance and the style of shapes.
