I see Sante D'Orazio's Kat-Lick School as a witty modern visual narrative of flirtation based on this traditional fetish. Kat is a beautiful Latina teen who differs from the schoolgirls we see every day in New York City only because her exceptional beauty. Her notebook is a kind of shield, holding up the possibility that she's jailbait. But the way her skirt is hiked up and the way her shirt has snaps, not buttons, suggests other possibilities. She's a dream schoolgirl and sometimes dreams come true, as they do here when we find that the pleated skirt conceals "Snoopy" bikini underwear and a tattoo, and that Kat is ready to trade her trainers for thigh-high spike heeled boots and to go entirely out of uniform. Obviously she is committed to completing her education, you might say in consummating it.
In Catholic school you hear the words of the Bible. You might even hear: "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven." But you're more likely to hear that on a Byrd's tape in a convertible. Because there comes a time in every good student's life when that student takes responsibility for his or her own learning and that's when you start to get it. It took me a long time and many Catholic schools but I finally figured out that Our Lady, the lady in blue you see standing on a globe with her foot on a snake, might be the mother of God, but she's also a Goddess in her own right, and she's always been here guiding us through the cycles of nature. She was a Blessed virgin once, but seasons change, and eventually it's time to unveil and play another role. Time for the solemn to become joyous and the sacred profane. And ice versa.
