Esso definisce uno spirito universale che si distinse per le sue straordinarie capacità e che, come nessun'altro, corrisponde all'ideale di perfezione dell'Uomo rinascimentale. Leonardo si è imposto in quasi tutti gli ambiti dell'arte e della scienza: nella fisica, nella meccanica, nell'ingegneria, nella matematica e geometria, nell'anatomia, nella geologia, nella botanica, nella geografia, come pure nella musica, nell'architettura, nella scultura e, non ultimo, nella pittura. Egli riuscì ad abbracciare i contrastanti mondi dell'arte e della scienza e a giungere, in ogni campo di applicazione, a sempre nuovi risultati. In uno scritto rivolto al signore di Milano, Ludovico Sforza, egli illustrava l'ampio spettro delle sue capacità, offrendogli le esperienze acquisite e le sue molteplici sperimentazioni: in dieci punti, Leonardo si descriveva come costruttore militare e inventore di macchine da guerra - di ponti levatoi, di marchingegni per abbattere mura di fortezze, scale d'assalto, mine, ordigni esplosivi, cannoni, pezzi d'artiglieria, armi navali, torri d'assalto, catapulte, proiettili e altro ancora - così come architetto di edifici pubblici e privati e di condotte d'acqua. It stands for a universal spirit who distinguished himself by his extraordinary abilities and corresponded more closely than anyone else to the ideai image of a Renaissance man. Leonardo excelled in almost all the fields of the arts and sciences: in physics, mechanics, engineering, mathematics and geometry, in anatomy, geology, botany and geography, equally in music, architecture, sculpture and, last but not least, painting. He was capable ofgrasping the different worlds ofart and science and achieving new insights in whatever field he turned his attention to. The broad spectrum of his abilities is reflected by a letter he wrote to the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, in which he offered his abilities, the experience he had gathered and his diverse experiments: in ten points he presented himself as a designer and inventor of war machines - of movable bridges, battering rams, scaling ladders, mines, explosive devices, cannon and guns, naval arms, tunnels, armored vehicles, catapults, projectiles and other things - as well as an architect of public and private buildings and water pipes. Das breite Spektrum seiner ahigkeiten spiegelt ein Schreiben an den Maiander Herrscher Ludovico Sforza wider, dem er sein Kannen, seine gesammelten Erfahrungen und seine vielseitigen Experimente anbietet: In zehn Punkten stellt er sich als Konstrukteur und Erfinder von Kriegsmaschinen dar - von transportierbaren Briicken, Mauerbrechern, Sturmleitern, Minen, Sprengkòrpern, Kanonen und Geschatzen, Seewaffen, Angriffsstollen, Sturmpanzern, Schleudermaschinen, Wurfgeschossen und anderem - sowie als Architekt von affentlichen und privaten Bauten und von Wasserleitungen.
