Questo volume
nasce, a 50 dalla morte di Pavese, dall'incontro tra due fotografi di età
e storie diverse ma accomunati da una lunga fedeltà al bianco e nero
come come modo esclusivo e controcorrente d'interpretare la realtà.
Probabilmente solo col bianco e nero si può tentare di approssimarsi
allo spirito dei suoi luoghi per restituirci le forti emozioni che hanno
accompagnato, nel tempo, i tanti lettori, vecchi e nuovi.
L'Italia di Pavese, pretelevisiva e preconsumistica, era in bianco e nero:
prima del "villaggio globale" S. Stefano Belbo era ancora la campagna
e Torino la città, due poli opposti tra i quali scorreva la tensione
da cui scoccava la scintilla della sua poesia.
Dopo Pavese è cambiato tutto, in Italia e nel mondo, nella letteratura
come nella vita: difficile oggi trovare l'altrove come per lui lo fu l'America.
Le sue stagioni restano consegnate all'Italia di ieri, ancora contadina,
su cui poi tanti hanno provato ad esercitare la nostalgica un po' stucchevole
ricerca dell'etàedenica. Nonostante tutto il mito di Pavese, nato
grazie al suicidio e prosperato all'insegna del "pavesismo", non
si è ancora spento anche in tempi molto distanti dalle sue campagne
e città. Ai lettori storici se ne aggiungono sempre di nuovi, le
sue opere sono ristampate e i critici ne discutono ancora. Non è
poco per uno scrittore che non ha mai fatto concessioni ai gusti del tempo
e delle mode.
Molti dei problemi sollevati o sofferti da Pavese, nella vita e nella letteratura,
ci riguardano ancora, oggi più che mai. Nell'apparente fissità
di luoghi e personaggi, delle stagioni vissute con lui e dopo di lui, questo
libro va alla ricerca di quel che resta del suo mondo ma anche di quello
che è cambiato nel tentativo di evitare la retorica dell'imbalsamazione
per porgere al lettore stimoli e suggestioni nuovi.

This book is the outcome of a meeting, fifty years after the death of Cesare Pavese, between two photographers quite different in age and background, but united by their longstanding, exclusive use of black and white photography, very much against the trend, to interpret reality.
li is probably only through black and white photography that the spirit of the places Pavese described can come through, albeit only partially, to arouse again the strong emotions felt, over time, by so many readers, both old and new. The Italy of Pavese, pre-television, and pre-consumerism, was black and white. Before the "global village", Santo Stefano Belbo was stili the countryside, and Turin, the city, two opposites between which there flowed a tension that provided the spark for his poetry. Everything changed after Pavese, Italy, the world, literature, and life; today, America is no longer "elsewhere", as it was for him. His seasons have been banished to the stili rural Italy of yesteryear, about which so many have since tried to arouse nostalgia through their somewhat sickening search for the good old days. The legendary figure created around Pavese, resulting from his suicide and the success of "pavesismo" (the literary movement devoted to spreading the work of Pavese), has stili not dieci, even at times so far removed from his countrysides and his cities.New readers are always added to the ranks of old readers; his works are reprinted, and critics discuss him stili. This is no mean feat for a writer that never made concessions for the tastes or trends of his day. Many of the problems raised and suffered by Pavese, in life and in literature, stili concern us, today more so than ever. In the apparent fixedness of places and people, of seasons lived with him and after him, this book goes in search of what remains of his world, but also of what has changed, in an attempt to avoid the rhetoric of mummification, to give the reader new stimuli and suggestions. That is, Cesare Pavese.
