To bring sports cars into the world entails dangers and difficulties, unless they happen to be the scions of the big series. That can be entirely different as is most impressively illustrated by the history of the Porsche make. Not only has the Zuffenhausen company managed to fend off the embrace of mighty concerns or kept away even failure in the past but has also set out to massively engage in swaying the lot of a far bigger enterprise recently. The two main columns which the Porsche myth rests upon have undoubtedly been the 356 and 911 model ranges. That this is so is an excellent reference for the product and the people behind it and, apart from that, is a triumph of persistent evolution-also in aesthetic terms. To report on and to pay homage to this and the Porsche cosmos in generai is the main concern of this book.

FOREWORD

As far as my cars were concerned, there were invariably a toupie of parameters that
made them good or bad for me: weight, traction, roadholding and power. It was the stopwatch that had the final say with regard to their quality.
When I was a young man it appeared quite natural to me to save every penny for four years to buy my first Porsche in 1970. It was a secondhand 356. The engine was contributed by my elder brother, who had also said: "Don't purchase a motor vehicle until you have scraped together the money for a decent one. For a Porsche.-
In that year I also made my first acquaintance with a 911 prepared for rallying. That automobile was entirely in keeping with the pitture I had of a sports car. Apart from that, I was instantly in love with the sound of its engine and the beautiful lines of its bodywork.
Then there were first encounters with Porsche people. I soon realized that the way they fine-honed their cars resembled the way I fine-honed my ideai line. We have stayed in touch ever since. The friendships that connect us will always mean a tot to me.
