 INTRODUCTION
Art Nouveau flourished in Europe and the Americas from about 1890 to the beginning of the First World War in 1914 and its influences are visible around the world. The movement encompassed art, architetture and the applied arts but is most strongly associated with the decorative arts. Art Nouveau design is characterised by richly ornamental and highly stylised organic forms, especially motifs inspired by plants and flowers. The Arts and Crafts movement in England, Japanese fiorai motifs, and the strong colours and fiat perspectives found in Japanese woodcuts Nere major influences in the development of the style.
Art Nouveau was a 'total' style: it encompassed alt the disciplines of art and design and sought to make art a part of everyday fife. Because of this, tute designs were prominent and important. As building materials, tiles were very functional and could be used to add highly decorative elements to architectural and interior designs. Lo stile Liberty fiorì in Europa e nelle Americhe tra il 1890 circa e l'inizio della prima guerra mondiale (1914) ed ebbe un'influenza visibile in tutto il mondo. Il movimento ha interessato l'arte, l'architettura e le arti applicate, ma è associato principalmente alle arti decorative. Il design dello stile Liberty è caratterizzato da forme naturali altamente stilizzate e fortemente ornamentali; in particolare, motivi ispirati a piante e fiori. Il movimento inglese Arts and Crafts, i motivi floreali giapponesi, insieme con i colori forti e le prospettive appiattite delle incisioni su legno giapponesi costituiscono le maggiori influenze nello sviluppo di questo stile.
Lo stile Liberty fu uno stile "totale": abbracciò tutte le discipline dell'arte e del design e tentò di integrare l'arte nella vita quotidiana. Per questo motivo, le piastrelle decorative assunsero un'importanza fondamentale. Come materiali da costruzione, le piastrelle risultavano molto funzionali e potevano essere utilizzate per aggiungere degli elementi altamente decorativi a design architettonici e di interni. Le piastrelle decorative presentate in questo libro provengono da Germania, Belgio, Inghilterra, Paesi Bassi e da diversi paesi dell'America latina. |
