VENICE - CITY OF ART

This book is an invitation to undertake, with the spirit of an observer endowed with a taste for surprises, a virtual journey accompanied by a traveller-author enamoured of Venice and able to accompany the reader along the canals of this splendid city with an eye for both its artistic heritage and the most interesting aspects of its local colour.

The Venice Lagoon was formed around the first millennium bc when strong, high breakers made several ruptures in a massive series of dunes. The wind did the rest, and vegetation soon colonized the remaining sand. Thus, for almost 3000 years, a long sandbar has protected a vast swamp area, the capricious creation of several river mouths, from the sea: the Piave, Brenta and Sile flow into the basin but have no access to the Adriatic. Consisting of water and sand, the basin belongs to neither land nor sea. With the help of the fury of the elements, the swamp has become a boundary, so to speak, that both unites and divides two worlds. At first glance this new environment does not appear to be all that unusual: tongues of land project into the brackish water, the light shines brightly on the surface of the wind-rippled water, and the sediment sinks to the bottom. But everything is moving, albeit slowly. The ebb and flow of the tides through the waters’ narrow passages is reminiscent of the waves breaking on shores beyond the sandbars. Fresh water from the rivers and saltwater from the sea merge to create a murky mixture that flows out of and then back into the lagoon. The basin hosts an ancient, mysterious ritual over which the moon officiates. A natural magic defends its delicate ecosystem by removing sand and mud from the bottom and thus slowing down the course of its destiny. The vast and placid water is also the home of islands that attract earthquakes and floods. Islets with indefinite contours that barely rise above the line of the horizon are reflected in the water and seem to melt away at the point where the sea touches the sky. Along the inner edges of the lagoon, stretches of shallow water hosting luxuriant vegetation are submerged only when the moon lies in conjunction with or in opposition to the sun. Here and there the flow of the tide marks the slightly elevated borders of these concave shoals. The lagoon, like the evolving water creature it is, will disappear, become amphibious, and then turn into a land creature. The waterways that flow into it inexorably deposit coarse sediment, thereby narrowing its passages. Those wells that remain in the innermost zones that the tides cannot reach are inevitably filled with sand. The sea, on the other hand, tends to extend its dominion. Pushed by the wind, it compresses the helpless, unsteady islands in a continuous attack, with no holds barred: under such a violent onslaught, the sandy shores often give way and break up. It was in this changeable and desolate environment that, spontaneously and slowly, the city of Venice grew on these sandy – and in the fifth century still rather barren – islets where only a few fishermen and salt workers had lived since time immemorial. We can imagine these people over the centuries slowly moulding the elements, creating a city of sand and wood, water and stone. The living conditions of the lagoon’s inhabitants must have seemed strange even to their peers. In fact, in the sixth century Cassiodorus, when speaking to fugitives from Aquileia who had found refuge in the Venice Lagoon, exclaimed: “Hic vobis aquatilum avium more domus est” (Here they live like aquatic birds). To grasp the character of the city of Venice and of its civilization, one needs to be acutely aware of its deep-rooted association with the lagoon.
